Purpose • To evaluate predictability of refractive outcomes and patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses with aspheric apodized diffractive or aspheric and spherical accommodative optics.
Methods • Cataract patients with <1 diopter of corneal astigmatism underwent on-label, bilateral implantation of: • ReSTOR IQ +3.0D add IOLs • Crystalens AO IOLs • Crystalens HD IOLs • Refractive enhancements were not permitted before study end • 6-month, prospective, randomized, subject-masked study • 3 month interim results are presented here • Study conducted at four-centers in the US
Methods • Manifest refraction (MR) was measured preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 and 3 months • Patients self-rating of bilateral vision (without glasses) was evaluated using the Cataract TyPE questionnaire* • Rating scale of 0 to 10 (0=best, 10=worst) * Javitt J, Jacobson G, Schiffman R. Validity and reliability of the Cataract TyPE Spec: an instrument for measuring outcomes of cataract extraction. Am J Ophthalmol. 2003;136:285-290
Patient Demographics AGE Between-treatment p-value: p = 0.56 GENDER Between-treatment p-value: p = 0.82
Mean Postop Refraction1-month visit Postoperative myopia observed among eyes implanted with Crystalens IOLs * *P<.0001; denotes statistically significant difference between IQ ReSTOR +3 IOL and Crystalens HD & AO IOLs.
Mean Postop Refraction3-month visit Postoperative myopia observed among eyes implanted with Crystalens IOLs. * IQ *P<.0001; denotes statistically significant difference between IQ ReSTOR +3 IOL and Crystalens HD & AO IOLs.
Predictability of Refractionwithin ±0.5 D * * N=76 N=55 N=53 N=59 N=61 N=74 *P=.02; IQ ReSTOR +3 IOL compared with Crystalens HD IOL
Self-Rating of Uncorrected Vision Mean ratings were highest for the apodized diffractive IOL group (+3.0 D), followed by the aspheric (AO) and the spherical (HD) accommodating IOLS. Best * * Better Rating Worst *p< 0.001
Conclusions • One and three months afterbilateral implantation of presbyopia-correcting IOLs, patients had: • more predictable refractive outcomes with aspheric apodized diffractive IOL than with the accommodative aspheric or accommodative spherical IOLs • greater satisfaction with the aspheric apodized diffractive IOL than with the accommodative aspheric or the accommodative spherical IOLs
