Sexual Harassment is something that affects many students during their school years Thesis
There are 2 types of sexual harassment: Quid Pro quo and hostile-environment • Occurs when the harasser advances towards the victim requesting sexual favors or trying to obtain some conduct of sexual nature • Example: A teacher tells a student that they can pass the class, but only if they submit into their sexual favors Quid Pro Quo Harassment
This is the second type of sexual harassment • This type of sexual harassment occurs when the harasser advances requesting sexual favors but also applying verbal and non-verbal behaviors that are sexually oriented. Lastly, it also includes physical contact with the victim. • This type of sexual harassment is characterized by the persistency of the harasser Hostile-Environment Harassment
This type of sexual harassment includes: rumor-spreading, verbal sexual communication, and homophobic name calling • About 18.9% of students in middle school have reported suffering this kind of abuses Hostile-Environment Harassment
Students that have said to have experienced the most sexual harassment have been the middle school students • Studies have also shown that physically touching the victim has been the most common type of sexual harassment • About 21.6 % of all the students have reported this type of sexual harassment • Studies also show that most of the time this happens in class Physical Harassment
Sometimes students don’t even have where to go complain about the abuse that they are undertaking • An example is Columbia University. The University restricted some of their students from talking about their sexual harassment outside of school grounds • This inevitably leads to more sexual harassment abuse because it restricts students from discussing their problems with higher authorities Restricted Access to Complaints
Studies have shown that people who have reported that they have been sexually harassed have, at a previous point, thought it was normal • This worries many directors and other people in charge of school districts because this not normal but very distressful Normalcy
A major reason why sexual harassment has become a major issue is because teachers in school a lot of times don’t know how differentiate between hyper sexuality and sexual harassment • Most of the time teachers see harassment in action but don’t do anything about it • This means no control Correct Handling
Sometimes people don’t know what sexual harassment is or to what extent it is still labeled sexual harassment • This is the reason people should be truly taught what sexual harassment is. Sometimes it is just a little touch on the shoulder or anywhere which may seem inoffensive Proper Teaching
We can also target another group of people that need to be taught what sexual harassment is and these are the teachers • Teachers need to know how to differentiate between other conducts such as bullying • This way teachers can give students the support that they need Proper Teaching
