  1. Challenge Problems • Form groups of 3 (no bigger) • Collect a Whiteboard, and pens/erasers from the front • In a moment I will post a question, please work on the problem in your groups showing all steps • Use diagrams/pictures where necessary NOTE: Next Tuesday we be Phys 12 AP not Chem 12 AP Next Class: Quiz on Hydrostatic Fluids

  2. Pascal’s Law It was determined that a 400N input force could lift a 4000N weight on the other side (i.e. that with the greater area). If the amount of input force does not increase, how can it lift a greater weight? If anything, the fact that the force is spread over a larger area on the output side suggests the overall pressure exerted on that side would decrease. Where does that extra force come from?

  3. Pascal’s Law If the amount of input force does not increase, how can it lift a greater weight? Pressure is a measure of Force/Area, if the area increases the Force increases Where does that extra force come from? In order to lift the second lever even a short distance, the first lever must be cover a large distance (see diagram to the right) Win = Wout

  4. Water Flowing from a Pipe Water flows from a pipe at the bottom of a water tank. It is accelerated from the tank by the force due to the hydrostatic pressure of the water in the tank. HINT: The water flows from the tank at a speed v, which can be computed using the formula P = ½ρv2. The pipe sits 1.4 m above the ground and the bucket is 3.3 m’s from the tank.

  5. Answer Depth = 1.94 m’s

  6. Archimedes Principle Archimedes investigated the composition of a royal crown using its weight and the amount of water it displaced. Use the following values to find the DENSITY of the crown. Weight of the Crown: 96.6N Weight of the Displaced Water: 5.01 N

  7. Answer Density = 19.3 kg/m3

  8. Physics 12 AP Formula Sheet + Constants

  9. Lab - Buoyancy Your Task: Determine the density and volume of the unknown metal sample
