Choices at 14 GCSEs are public examinations. The results will stay with you throughout the rest of your education and into your career. Success in GCSEs is needed to progress on to Further and Higher Education, Training and Employment. GCSE choices can have an effect on choices available at Post-16. To seek wholeness, Throughfaith, quest and learning to become what God intends us to be. 2
Choices at 14 Many courses have an element called Controlled Assessment; the rules about these are different to traditional coursework. For example: English Language 60% Design & Technology 60% Health and Social Care 60% Art & Design 60% Food and Nutrition 60% Media Studies 60% To seek wholeness, Throughfaith, quest and learning to become what God intends us to be. 3
Choices at 14 Students starting two-year GCSE courses in September 2013 will sit their exams at the end of the course in summer 2015. Students will no longer be able to re-sit individual unit exams in order to boost their marks – although they may retake the whole GCSE examination. Students may, however, be given an early opportunity to sit Maths and English GCSEs in November of Year 11. To seek wholeness, Throughfaith, quest and learning to become what God intends us to be. 4

Choices at 14 English Baccalaureate Students choose: History or Geography French or Spanish + 2 options from the list below: To seek wholeness, Throughfaith, quest and learning Art, Business Studies, Computing, Drama, Food & Nutrition, French, Geography, History, ICT, Media Studies, Music, GCSE Physical Education, Product Design (Graphics, Resistant Materials, or Textiles) and Spanish. to become what God intends us to be. 7
Choices at 14 • Specialist Programme • Students choose one of the following: • Computing and ICT + 3 options from the list below • (Students taking Computing and ICT do not study BACS and therefore have an extra option) • Double Health and Social Care + 2 options from the list below • Double Applied Business + 2 options from the list below • The English Baccalaureate is also available to students who choose a specialist • Programme by choosing History or Geography and French or Spanish. Choices at 14 General Programme Students choose any 4 subjects from the list below: To seek wholeness, Throughfaith, quest and learning Art, Business Studies, Computing, Drama, Food & Nutrition, French, Geography, History, ICT, Media Studies, Music, GCSE Physical Education, Product Design (Graphics, Resistant Materials, or Textiles) and Spanish. to become what God intends us to be. 9
Choices at 14 Level 1 courses equivalent to GCSE Grades D to G. CATERING….. This course will introduce you to basic food preparation along with health and safety issues, food hygiene and how to use large catering equipment safely MOTOR VEHICLE MAINTENANCE….. This course will introduce you to basic motor vehicle maintenance along with health and safety issues. CONSTRUCTION….. This course will introduce you to basic construction practical work including painting, and basic bricklaying as well as theory work supporting these skills. HAIR AND BEAUTY….. This course will introduce you to basic hairdressing services as well as salon reception duties, health and safety in the salon and customer services. This course takes place one afternoon per week at the Vocational Centre in Cramlington Learning Village and does not finish until 4pm. HORTICULTURE….. This course will introduce you to basic horticultural skills and you will work both in school and at the school allotment. You will also visit Kirkley hall and local garden centres. 10
Choices at 14 What sort of person are you? Think about what you’re interested in: Other cultures and languages, writing projects, helping people, being outdoors or designing things. Types of activity you enjoy most – working things out and thinking them through, practical activities or artistic options like painting, designing or performing music skills you have developed following outside interests. 11
Choices at 14 How do you choose? What subjects do I need at post 16? Will you be successful at it? You’ve got to stick at it for two years! What will help you to get a job? What do you enjoy Can you manage with the course? What are you good at? Are you leaving your options open? 12
