Real time • 4 meetings so far. • Consensus: Real-time will be required to operate the LHC. • The demands on speed appear to be reasonable, and data acquisition, or measure & correct appear to be necessary at a maximum of 10 Hz. Bandwidth requirements are also moderate. • Aim to provide a global real-time framework to support the multiple input, multiple output requirements foreseen.
RT requirements II Response limited by PC/magnet
Latencies Which should allow 10 Hz
Control: assumptions • Snap-back and low energy provide the challenge • Nominal is the worse case... • The “multipole factory” takes care of at least 80% of the effect i.e. • magnetic measurements • non-linear models • on-line reference magnets • Characteristic frequency of snap-back slow & not changed by feed-forward from “multipole factory” • Corrections to: • horiz. orbit correctors (b1) & tuning quads. (b2) • sextupole (b3) and decapole (b5) spool pieces 70 s Characteristic frequency is low

Power Converters • Major system - all magnets - set, ramp, trim etc. etc. Offering RT control at 100 Hz (whether you need it or not!) • Digital controllers:- CERN design, manufactured by industry. Prototypes for String II. • Gateways:- standard SL-CO - Power PC running LynxOS • Fieldbus: WorldFIP from CEGELEC • Timing: via an IRIG-B receiver card MCCS Server RT LHC Network Gateway Gateway Gateway Gateway ~80 Gateways Up to 30 Digital Controllers Per WorldFIP fieldbus ~1700 Digital Controllers
Real time Beam Instrumentation and Power Converter systems are planning on providing real-time acquisition and correction from the front-ends to at least the gateway level. Ethernet by appears to be capable of providing the necessary level of performance via dedicated Gigabit Ethernet A real-time environment will be necessary at the high-level. A logical architecture is required to allow the implementation of a well-designed, integrated system A generic approach will be adopted to provide standard facilities.
