  1. Biomass to Energy Ankur Scientific, Baroda, India

  2. What we are – About Ankur Scientific

  3. Founded by Dr.B.C.Jain In 1986 12 National Associates 4 Regional Offices Located in Vadodara 125 Employees Extensive Mfg. Facilities GoI recognised R&D World wide leader In Small & Medium scale Gasifiers 8 International Associates Senior Management Well known Nationally & Internationally for expertise In Gasifier Technology Installed more than 900 gasifiers worldwide

  4. Vision We want to provide Energy that is Green, Clean, Sustainable & Convenient at costs that enable all to use it

  5. Achievements • ISO:9001, 14001 and OHSAS: 18001 certified • Won National Award for Technology Development in 1990 • Twice won the FGI award for Excellence in Science and Technology • Won the FGI award for Best SSI Unit. • DSIR approved R&D Department • Granted many research projects by the GoI

  6. Ankur - Strengths • One stop shop - designing to servicing done in house - unlike competitors. • Simple System - Extremely clean gas generated from the gasifier, making downstream cleaning systems simple. • Organizational ability to handle large international projects - We do at least 10 international assignments an year. • Largest field experience - ‘Ankur’ makes more gasifiers than all other manufacturers cumulatively.

  7. What we do? At Ankur Scientific we are engaged in Research, Development and Commercialization of Biomass to Energy equipment. • Ankur is today seen as a world leader in the field of Biomass Gasification. • Both Wet and Dry fermentation technologies are offered to convert various biomasses to Biogas.

  8. Gasification

  9. What is Biomass Gasification? Basic Process Chemistry • Conversion of solid fuels into combustible gas mixture called producer gas (CO + H2 + CH4) • Involves partial combustion of biomass • Four distinct process in the gasifier viz. • Drying • Pyrolysis • Combustion • Reduction

  10. Gasification – Basic Process Chemistry Schematic

  11. Producer Gas - Composition?

  12. Ankur – Gasifiers Product Portfolio The WBG Series:Fuel : Woody Biomass What we Offer The FBG Series:Fuel : Fines (Rice Husk) The Combo Series:Fuel : Both of the above

  13. Ankur – Gasifiers Product Portfolio WBG Series – • 5 kWe to 2200 kW. • Uses wood, corncob, coconut shells, bamboo pieces as the fuel. • Thermal output 12,500 – 4,500,000 kCal/hr. FBG Series – • 40 kWe to 700 kW.

  14. Ankur – Gasifiers Product Portfolio FBG Series (contd.) – • Uses rice husk, mustard stalk, coconut stalk etc. as fuel. • Thermal output 100,000 – 1,650,000 kCal/hr COMBO Series – • 40 kWe to 700 kWe. • Multi Fuel capability (woody as well as fines) • Thermal output 100,000 – 1,650,000 kCal/hr

  15. Applications Power Generation Thermal Applications • Hot Air Generators • Dryers • Boilers • Thermic Fluid Heaters • Ovens • Furnaces & Kilns • Irrigation Pumping • Village Electrification • Captive Power (Industries) • Grid-fed Power from Energy • Plantations on Wastelands • Simultaneous Charcoal and • Power Production

  17. Indicative Schematic – Thermal

  18. Environmental Aspects Used in re-circulation mode with zero discharge. Occasional ph adjustment and simple treatment may be needed. Water Package Gasifier does not release gas to the atmosphere. Combustion in user equipments (connected to gasifier) is much cleaner compared to liquid fuels. Air

  19. Environmental Aspects(contd.) Charcoal can be sold as fuel. Biological ash can be returned to the soil. Solid Waste Package In case of major user equipment i.e. genset, noise level is lower than with 100% liquid fuels. Noise Biomass materials contain negligible Sulphur

  20. Some Case Studies

  21. Thermal Application – Granule Drying • Khaitan • One of the leading chemical manufacturers in the country • WBG-500 is replacing 110 liters of FO per hour • Payback in less than 8 months • Recently installed `Ankur’ 1 X WBG-850 gasifier and 2 X WBG-700. • All their plants now work with Ankur Gasifiers.

  22. Thermal Application – Calcination Kiln • Calchem • One of the leading Calcium Carbonate manufacturers in the country • WBG-850 (in Hot Gas Mode) is replacing 350 kgs of coal per hour. A 2nd WBG-1100 is replacing 450 kgs of coal per hour • The company had also applied for VERs and has been able get a buyer for 6 Euros per tonne

  23. Captive Power – Largest Carpet Mfr. • Based in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. • Biggest carpet manufacturer in the country • Use Diesel gensets for their power needs due to acute power shortage. • Installed ‘Ankur’ FBG-250 along with recommended Diesel engines to replace 75% of their Diesel use. • ‘Ankur’ FBG-500 + 2 X Greaves engines being installed

  24. Tea Company - Cogen • Two orders received from Finlays, UK • Muzizi Factory – GAS-250 • Ankole Factory – WBG-200 in Ultra Clean Gas Mode • Muzizi Factory • Complete co-generation system being offered – Heat recovery from Engine Exhaust, Engine Jacket and After Cooler. • Synchronization panel to synchronize the GAS-250 system with existing 250 KVA genset.

  25. From top left to right – Exhaust Cooler, Remote Radiator, Gasifier, Engine Genset modified to operate on Producer Gas

  26. EERC- USA • The whole gasifier system is mounted on a trailer • The gasifier is coupled to three turbines of 30 kW

  38. Biogas Plants Offered Ankur Scientific offers plants on the following feeds : • Cattle dung based • Kitchen waste based • Vegetables & fruit waste based • Dry Crop residues based • Organic effluent based

  39. Benefits of Biogas Plants • Contributes substantially in reducing Global Warming. • Cost effective replacement for Fossil Fuels. • This Smoke Free gas emits less carbon dioxide as compared to other fuels. • A very efficient and environmentally friendly solution for disposing off various organic matter.

  40. Biogas Plants – Reduction in Global Warming METHANE • Contributes largely in Global Warming • Traps 21 times more heat than CO2 • Over the 100 years – 25 times more temperature impact than that by CO2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biogas Plant  Traps Methane  Fuel  Carbon Dioxide.
