  3. USDAF • In local communities • Like community sports & Special Olympics • Use Paralympic & ranked athletes as coaches & role models

  4. BlazeSports Georgia, 1998 • Blaze = Atlanta Paralympics mascot • Model program developed for replication • Year round community sports delivered by local parks & recreation agencies • State level sports camps, clinics, & competition • National seminars & competition

  5. BlazeSports Georgia, 1998 • Not about creating world champion athletes • Although expect some folks to eventually be involved in Paralympics • Sports are those that are in the Paralympics • Develop junior competitive sports • W/C basketball & racing

BlazeSports Clubs of America • Launched March 2002 • Cooperative of USDAF, NRPA, & U.S. Paralympics • 9 communities in 7 states • Maine Niles SRA • Plan 10 new clubs through 2005 • Agencies will provide training programs • Supported by regional & national camps, training clinics & competitions operated by USDAF

  9. Inclusion Practice • Nora is a 40 year old with a traumatic brain injury who is non-verbal but does use sign language to communicate and would like to participate in a yoga class. What do you need to do to include her?

  10. Inclusion Practice • You are the manager of a community fitness center and a man who is 45 and has quadriplegia from a spinal cord injury comes to be a member of your center. What adaptations might you have to make?

  11. Inclusion Practice • Billy and Mary are 7 year old twins with autism. Their mom has signed them up for the after school program. What is needed to include them in the program?
