  1. December 6, 2010 Bonnyville Centralized High School Environment and Sustainability

  2. Setting our course… • Outcome • Students will identify different viewpoints on resource development and land usage • Students will evaluate the actions and policies devised to reduce human impact • Objectives • Students will learn about resource development specific to the energy sector and forestries • Students will learn about agreements and legislations designed to address human impact

  3. Deforestation (continued) • While greenhouse emissions are an issue in the developed world, deforestation is more a problem in the developing world • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq2UHiyYwLo • Compare the process of oil excavation to harvesting trees. What’s harder?

  4. Deforestation (continued) • How do you use trees? • Do you have a wood-burning stove at home? • Do you write notes on paper (or your desk) in school? • What’s underneath the vinyl siding of your house? • How about the chairs and table where you enjoy supper?

  5. Deforestation (concluded) • Is there a way to use less forested land? • Consider the main reasons for deforestation: • Globalization (era of imperialism in particular) • Population Growth and Overpopulation • Urbanization • Agricultural Land http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5jnJdnQPr8&feature=more_related

  6. Searching for Sustainability • There has been recognition that human actions leading towards progress can have environmental impacts • Approaches now the approaches used take into consideration both resources and environment • Approaches include both government legislation and agreements

  7. Development Agreements • Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) – example of an agreement made between governments with common interests • Control 78% of the world’s crude oil reserves • When these countries make decisions on production, they control demand and prices

  8. Fisheries • Strict conservation laws on fisheries have become commonplace • Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) – a distance off a shoreline where only the most adjacent country can fish • Subject to national laws within that EEZ • Problem: fish move freely in and out of an EEZ • All the quotas set by Canada did not mean anything outside the zone

  9. Fisheries (continued) • Turbot War (1995) • A Spanish trawler was seized just outside the Grand Banks fishing by Canadian Coast Guard • Three years earlier, the cod moratorium came into effect in Canada’s Grand Banks • Discovered that the Spanish were using nets that were against regulation

  10. International Agreements • Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) • Designed to discourage people from capturing endangered plants and animals for trading • Endangered species trafficking is ranked third biggest market in the black market • Questionable whether CITES has been successful because there is now an increase in poaching

  11. Kyoto Protocol • Aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent further climate change • Canada is one of 150 countries to sign Kyoto • Expects more developed countries to achieve most of the reduction • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-zxxQQQlVA&feature=related • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF_anaVcCXg&feature=related
