Cook turns to online fundraising plan to support Olympic dream Milo Duebendorfer 2B
5 Facts • A ski racer named Dustin Cook is on the Canadian Alpine Ski team and he is hoping to get into the Olympics in Sochi, Russia for the first time, next year. • He is training full time and he can’t work so he is fundraising money on his page www.makeachamp.com/dustincookthat he put up last week which has gotten him more than 10% of his $10,000 that he wants to get. • He said that being a full time ski racer is really cool, but it’s expensive and working out 5-6 days a week is a challenge. • One of Cook’s teammates raised $12,630 earlier this summer. • Cook who practices different skills has gotten really good in super-G and giant slalom in past years.
5 Facts • He began racing on the World Cup tour in 2011 and had a really good season where he finished in the top 30 places and he got his first points. • In order to qualify for Canada’s Olympic team for 2014, Cook would need to finish twice in the top 12 World Cup results. • Since Cook was born in 1988 he is old enough to represent Canada under the ‘future medalist category’. • The Canadian Alpine Ski Team has 23 senior racers on it. • The national governing body for skiing types is, Alpine Canada Alpin.
Opinion I think that he had a really good idea to raise money so he can get into the Olympics. He is good enough to get into the Olympics in Russia because in 2011 he finished in the top 30 and to get into the Olympics in Russia he needs to finish in the top 12. When he finished in the top 30 it was 2011 so he has had 2 years of training to get better and he has all winter to train really hard so I think that he will be able to.
