Welcome to U.S. History I! • My name is Brock Mislan • My 15th year in education • Prior Experience includes: • Trainer for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards; • Former supervisor of social studies; • Staff development trainer and teacher mentor
Currently • Cluster Coordinator of grades 9-12 social studies at BTSD • Adjunct lecturer, Teacher Preparation Program, Rutgers University • A husband (14 years) and dad to two boys, aged 10 and 5
A summary of the learning experience • The American Experience • Focus on reflection, writing, empowerment and civic engagement • The student “as historian” • Focus on big questions and major themes instead of memorizing details • Primary sources drive the learning
Procedures • Bell Procedure We always start with written, quiet reflection • How do we solve problems in American society? • What were two consequences of westward expansion? • List three reasons why immigrants came to America. • What does it mean to be American?
Curriculum (1860s-1935) • Westward Expansion and Populism • Industrialization and Immigration • The Progressive Era • Imperialism • World War I • The Roaring Twenties • The Great Depression Begins • The New Deal
Group Procedure • Each group member plays a role • 4 roles: • Manager • Recorder • Researcher • Timer • All group members make intellectual contributions
Tardy • School policy is a an administrative detention for the 5th late • I will call you before that happens so we can find a solution • Students should be seated and quietly working on the “Do Now” before the bell rings.
Discipline • Class rules are based upon • Being ready to learn • Treating others with respect • Remaining on task • Working together • When there is a problem, I will call you. • Disruptive behavior often limits the ability for others to learn and demonstrate their learning. • Grades are not based upon behavior.
Grades • School-wide structure • 60% of marking period: tests/major projects • 30%: quizzes and minor assignments • 10%: daily homework and classwork • I will allow students/groups to redo or retake assessments (this is a departmental policy) • I have high expectations for your children…
My role • …and an indefatigable will to help them succeed. • Extra Help is continuous and ongoing • I listen • I model • I give useful feedback • I am very prepared • I give rubrics and exemplars for projects • We practice questions and develop strategies before tests
Notebook • For each activity, a heading • The date • The title that is on the screen
Class activities • Are designed to help students to analyze and evaluate the ideas were are studying. • Emphasis is on student creations. • Conflict resolution: mediation and negotiation • The writing process • Seminar discussion • Student presentations • Authentic tasks: writing a memo, planning a project, devising a solution
