  3. Vertebrate Pests In this computer rotation, we will look at animals that • we are familiar with • we like to look at • can become pests JUST CUTE PLAIN STUPID NOT CUTE (not the bear)

  4. Coyotes OPPORTUNISTIC: can take advantage of immediate opportunities ADAPTABLE: can change so it is better able to survive or reproduce Coyotes are opportunistic AND adaptable

  5. Coyotes Opportunistic • Eat a wide variety of foods including rodents, rabbits, cats and small dogs, pet food, garbage, geese eggs • More available food can result in larger litter sizes • Use human structures as dens, e.g. culverts

  6. Coyotes Adaptable: Coyotes have changed behaviors in order to live in populated areas • Hunt at night more often than their rural cousins • Losing their fear of humans

Pigeons are Adaptable In the wild, pigeons • live on rocks and cliffs • eat seeds and grains • have the number of offspring the food supply can support In urban settings, pigeons • adapt to living on ledges and buildings • still eat seeds and grains, but will scavenge garbage and other food dropped by people

  9. Pigeons as Pests They are sociable animals and live in flocks in parks and open spaces Their droppings are unsightly and the acid can damage buildings, monuments and cars Their nests block drains and gutters which causes water damage Dead birds in open water tanks cause contamination

  10. People and Pigeons People like to feed the birds. With an abundant supply of food, pigeons can produce more young They can breed up to six times a year

  11. This can cause overcrowding Overcrowding can lead to spread of disease and death

  12. Overcrowding also causes more unsightly droppings and more damage to property

  14. Who Are The Real Pests? • We build our houses in their habitats • We leave abundant food out for them • Then we call them pests • What changes in human behavior could help solve the pest problem?
