Kicking Team Eligible to touch the Ball (6-1-3) • After it touches a Team B player • After it breaks the plane of and remains beyond Team B’s restraining line • After it touches any player, the ground or an official beyond Team B’s restraining line
Free Kick Out of Bounds untouched by B between the goal lines. Three options: (6-2) • 1) B’s ball at out of bounds spot • 2) 5 yards - previous spot and re-kick • 3) B’s ball 30 yards beyond A’s restraining line
Snap • Work WIDE (off the field) • Indicate Line of Scrimmage • Decide Lineman or Back • Determine eligible pass receivers • Wide man more than seven yards • Neutral zone / focus on ball- legal snap • Restricted Linemen / False start / defensive actions to cause false start
Legal Snap (2-23) • Handing or passing it backwards • Quick, continuous motion • Ball actually leaving the hand or hands
Scrimmage Line (2-21-2) • Vertical plane that passes through the ball nearest the team’s end zone • Indicate with up-field foot extended
Lineman (2-27-4) • Lineman, legally on the line of scrimmage • Facing opponents goal • Shoulders parallel (eligible receivers - ‘approximately parallel’) to line of scrimmage • Head breaking the plane drawn through the snapper’s waist
Back (2-27-4-b) • Team A player • Does not break plane through the rear-most part, other than legs or feet, of nearest player on the line of scrimmage • Lineman becomes back when he moves to a position as a back and stops
Eligible Pass Receivers (7-3-3) • Wearing a number other than 50 through79, • And positioned: • 1) on the end of the line of scrimmage, • 2) legally in the backfield or • 3) in position to receive a hand-to-hand snap • Determine at huddle break
Restricted Linemen (7-1-4) • Wearing a number 50 through 79 (no matter where positioned on line) • Positioned between the snapper and the player on the end of the line (no matter what number)
Number 79 threatens 61 and 78 54 61 79 78 5 0
Number 79 threatens 54, 61, and 78 54 61 79 78 5 0
Defensive Actions to Cause False Start (7-1-5-a-4) • Stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage • Quick, abrupt actions not part of normal defensive movement • Obvious attempt to cause an offensive player to false start
Forward Progress • Move straight downfield, parallel with sideline • Square off, mark progress with downfield foot • Come in on close plays: 4th down, goal line • Tough call: Runner down or score at goal line
Forward Progress (continued) • Sidelines: watch action out of bounds • See the ball before blowing the whistle • “Slow whistle, slow flag” • Option plays toward you: “crack-back” block, pitch man • Option plays away from you: quarterback
Pass Coverage • Stay wide • Not too fast downfield (most passes less than 15 yards) • Focus on players • Know when pass is thrown (players’ eyes, reactions - look if you need to) • Stop to observe action
Scrimmage Kick - Linesman • Stay on scrimmage line • Help Referee if snap is bad • Primary responsibility: know if kick crosses neutral zone • Move downfield after kick crosses n.z. • Help BJ with player who signals fair catch • Watch for illegal blocks
Scrimmage Kicks - LJ • Help Referee if snap is bad • Watch receiving team for holding • Move downfield with first wave • Help BJ with player who signals fair catch • Watch for illegal blocks
Calling Fouls • See, confirm in your mind, “slow flag” • Spot or yardline • Don’t show emotion • Reporting fouls: • Offense / Defense, Kicking / Receiving • Live Ball / Dead Ball • During runback, kick, etc.
Signal Timeout (3-3-2) • After: • A kick down ends • There is a change of possession • An obvious first down • Calling a foul • A 4th down play
Measurements • Line Judge: • Indicate spot on appropriate 5-yd line for L • Linesman: • Anticipate measurement, be on sideline • Go to 5-yd line away from ball • Have extra clip
