Sources for the NAR Data • For this presentation, all of the Class 1 railroads in the US and Canada directly provided data • Railroads are voluntarily adding BOE Cause Codes to their 5800.1 reports • More precision than PHMSA Cause Codes • Short line data were retrieved from PHMSA online • US only • Most lacked BOE Cause Codes, so they are not included in those breakdowns
