  6. Name Servers are like website phone directories. They tell computers where a website is located on the internet. wintersystems.com has a IP address of 74.208.65.125 Its much easier to remember wintersystems.com then a string of numbers. This is the purpose of name servers.

Work ok for most businesses however have a number of disadvantages. Can be very slow depending on the number of sites and or if some sites have very high traffic. Server resources are shared such as processor and memory. Can be more of a target to hacking attempts. A hacker that compromises the server might have access to a greater number of sites. A greater chance for the server to be blacklisted if any one site is used for spamming (sending unwanted emails)
