  2. Matthew 6:14-15 14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

  3. 3 Levels • Between individual and God • Between two individuals • Within ourselves We often are not as forgiving as we should be

  4. Example • Parents get a call at 2 am • Their 18 year-old son was killed by drunk driver • Visit convicted driver in jail • Taught – cried – forgave • They baptized him

  5. Example • They appealed to have his sentence reduced • They now live on the same block – attend church together • They travel together to schools to speak about drunk driving • QUESTION: Would you have been able to do that?

  6. Forgiveness is NOT: • Forgetting • Condoning • Absolution • Self-sacrifice • Sign of Weakness

  7. Forgiveness IS: • Form of realism • Sign of positive self-esteem • Letting go of guilt • Not seeking to punish those who hurt us • Moving on

  9. Conclusion “so that you can be free to do and be whatever you decide instead of stumbling along according to the script painful past experiences wrote for you.”

  10. Conclusion IS THERE SOMEONE YOU NEED TO FORGIVE? BOTTOM LINE: YOU CAN’T GO TO HEAVEN UNTIL YOU LEARN TO FORGIVE.
