Why do we share many of the same mental pictures of these people? • We may share similar stereotypes.
What is a stereotype • A stereotype is a fixed mental picture of the way members of a group think or behave.
What things mightbe the subject of stereotypes? • Country • Religions • Race • Age • Appearance • Occupation
Why should we avoid using stereotypes? • Stereotypes ignore a person’s individuality! • These attitudes keep you from seeing the real world!
How can you spot a stereotype? 1. Does the statement include an exaggeration? 2. Does the statement include the words none, always, all or never? 3. Are the statement’s adjectives strong? lazy, sneaky, cruel, stupid, awesome 4. Is the statement’s tone reflecting absolute good or bad feeling?
