Lead Up to Human Rights Violation • On June 30, 1989 General Omar Bashir took control of Sudan’s government by military force. • In 1993, he took presidency as a military leader in Sudan. • In 2003, two Darfuri rebel movements took place against the Sudanese government. The government responded with Sudanese forces and Arab militia attacks on hundreds of villages in Darfur. Years of violation: 1990-Present day Rights Violated • People were violated by killing, torture, rape, destroying land, and more. • Genocide claimed 400,000 lives and displaced over 2,500,000 people. • 5,000 died each month. Occurred after human rights violations • 1990’s: Beginning of conflict • 2003: 400,000 had been killed (150,000) everyday • September 9th 2004, genocide actually occurred. • Present day: Conflict still going on. Action to Prevent Violations Victims of Islamic genocidal warfare in Sudan. • Move people out of the country. • More law enforcement such as UN officials. • Making new laws. • The UN urged the two countries’ governments to halt the escalating violence. “We tried to stop the genocide from happening then we got overrun.” –Government official Lehartoum UN personnel evacuating wounded victims in South Sudan.
