What is a Journal Club? • Group of people meeting to read and discuss journal literature • Share knowledge, exchange ideas • Stay current in a field • Gain deeper understanding of a topic • Uphold continuous learning • Develop critical analysis skills • Translate research into practice

The Modern Club • Group of people with a common goal or interest • Chooses an article from the literature • Performs critical appraisal • Applies learnings to practice • Goal: improve evidence-based practice
Critical Appraisals • “Critical appraisal is the process of systematically examining research evidence to assess its validity, results, and relevance before using it to inform a decision”(Hill & Spittlehouse, 2001, qtd. in OPHLA, 2008) • Critical appraisal tools help guide the process • Different domains depending on topic • EBM.med.ualberta.ca
Why the Librarian? • For the group: • Guide the process, meeting facilitation, searching the literature • Provide other support when needed (ex. setting up web applications) • For the librarian: • Boosts reference • Liaison role • Collection development • Builds relationships
