Surface T at all PISCO moorings shows same 10-100 day pattern, but SB Channel stations have greater high-frequency variability.
Surface T at Point Sal is 2-5o cooler than Ellwood. Seasonal variation at a given station is ~ 5o. Pt Sal Purisima Arguello Jalama Alegria Ellwood
1st EOFs of NDBC Air and Water T and PISCO Water T show same seasonal variations.
Alongshore coherence in Temperature (10-day period) is greater north of Point Conception.
Outside the SB Channel, wind events drive temperature changes, first near shore (PISCO), then 30km offshore (NDBC).
Inside SB Channel, similar pattern, but drawn by someone drinking triple lattes; more high-frequency variability.
1st EOFs of NDBC Air and Water T and PISCO Water T show same seasonal variations.

Point Conception is a major biogeographic boundary. Do the PISCO physical data reflect this? • Yes, it’s the edge of an upwelling zone: • surface T and stratification decrease to North • upwelling pattern is more apparent to North • coherence at 10-day period increases to North • tidal and faster variability decrease to North • But: • surface T at all stations co-vary with seasons • Other differences: • cyclonic circulation in Santa Barbara Channel • internal waves more common in channel • species range boundaries
