Programa de Doble InmersiónHedenkamp Elementary Hedenkamp Spanish Dual Immersion Program
¿Qué es un programa de inmersión?What is an immersion program? • Serves both language minority and language majority students concurrently. • Two language groups are put together and instruction is delivered through both languages. • For example… Spanish Immersion here at Hedenkamp. • The goals of the program are for both groups to become biliterate, succeed academically, and develop cross-cultural understanding (Howard, 2001).
Declaración de misiónDual Immersion Program Mission Statement Hedenkamp’s Dual Immersion Program is committed to providing an academically challenging and language rich standards-based curriculum to ensure that all students will become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. Children of all races, cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds will be prepared to contribute to a complex, diverse global community.

¿Qué enseñan en el programa de Inmersion? What is taught in the Spanish Immersion program? • All classes are taught standards developed by the State of California for each grade level. These standards are taught through district-wide adopted curriculum available in both Spanish and English. • Depending on percentages for his/her grade your child will receive that instruction (the same in any other class), while the language may be different.
Curriculum K.2 Students recognize national and state symbols and icons such as the national and state flags, the bald eagle, and the Statue of Liberty. In every kindergarten class students will learn to identify national symbols. In Spanish Immersion classes they learn the exact same facts but all in Spanish. Teachers are trained in Strategies that incorporate TPR, GLAD, Sheltered Instruction and Scaffolding to deliver information in a manner that is most comprehensible to Spanish learners.
Retos?Challenges? Kindergarten can be a challenge for any child. You know your child best. The very nature of adding another language to the mix of factors for Kindergarten can be very rewarding but also challenging to some children.

Parent Committment The Spanish Immersion program is a 7 year commitment. A language takes 5-7 years to develop at near-native fluency. While you see a great deal of growth early on, this does NOT indicate that your child is Bilingual and Biliterate, yet.
