A learning platform is defined as software, or a combination of different types of software, that sits on, or is accessible from, an organisation’s network, and that supports teaching and learning for practitioners and learners. Key features of a VLE “toolbox” • Course content distribution • Creating materials using simple web tools • Uploading existing material – handouts, presentations etc • Controlled release – eg ‘open’ and ‘closed’ on certain dates • Group communication & collaboration • Bulletin/discussion boards – limited to course members • Chatrooms – limited to course members • Shared on-line whiteboards • Course calendar functions • Assessment • Formative and summative assessments • Quizzes • Surveys/polls (anonymous) E-Guides training programme 2006 - 2007
