The Boss of Bosses: Carlo Gambino Alysa Irvin EnglishII-4th 4-12-13
The Making of a Mob Boss • Carlo Gambino was born in Sicily and immigrated to U.S. as a stowaway.
Early record • He began as an enforcer to Don Vito Cascio Ferro. • Later he worked as a rum runner for the Castellano family during the era of prohibition.
Moving on • At the age of 19 Carlo got his start using his mother’s family connections, the Castellanos, who were already established in New York. • He was smuggled aboard a freighter bound for America.
How he became The Boss • Gambino inherited the family after Albert Anastasia was murdered (allegedly by Gambino and another gunman with Vito Genovese’s approval).
What makes a Boss. • At only 5'7" and with a hook nose, Carlo was respected and tough, and not afraid to face those who owed money to the Honored Society, carrying out orders with a ruthlessness that was soon noted. Gambino wasinducted into the Society on his 19th birthday.
What made Carlo unique? • Carlo drove the feds crazy with his illusive and low profile behavior. He didn’t dress to his position and didn’t talk to reporters. He lived in a “modest” row house. • Even though he was under constant surveillance he was only ever incarcerated once.
THE REIGN OF GAMBINO • Gambino ran the mob for a total of 22 years, he brought lots of profit for the Gambino and only served in prison for 22 months in 50 years of crime.
The fall of Carlo Gambino • Carlo Gambino died of a heart attack while watching the Yankees game at his summer home in Long Island on Oct. 15, 1976.
