  1. Enjoy the Presentation? Thrush Sarah Siew Tuesday, February 14, 2012 Period 4 Mrs. Mechalske I am Thrush, the Bird.

  2. What is it? • Yeast infection of mucus membrane lining the mouth and tongue. • Its scientific name is Candidaisis. • Antibiotics can kill beneficial bacteria as well as the bacteria they are intended to kill, and thus give Candida the opportunity to grow • Some types are: • Systeminc (in the blood) • Oral (in the mouth) • Vaginal (in the vagina) • Penile (in the penis) • Cutaneous (on the skin) Candida Albicans

  3. Causes of Thrush • Caused by forms of a fungus called Candida Albicans. • Thrives in moist and warm areas of the body. • It is usually kept in check by your immune system and other types of germs that also normally live in your mouth. • When your immune system is weak, however, the fungus can grow. • Factors that can increase your chances of getting thrush: • Being in poor health • Being very old or very young • Having an HIV infection or AIDS • Receiving chemotherapy for cancer or drugs to suppress your immune system • Taking steroid medications

  4. Causes of Thrush • People with diabetes and high blood sugar levels are more likely to get oral thrush because extra sugar in saliva acts like food for Candida Albicans. • Taking too many antibiotics can overkill the healthy bacteria that help keep Candida Albicansfrom growing too much. • People with poorly fitting dentures are also more likely to get thrush. • Life-threatening thrush tends to occur only in those with a weak immune system, such as AIDS or cancer patients. • Pregnant women and women between ages 30 and 40 are most likely to suffer from thrush, although many women will suffer from thrush throughout their lives Thrush in Babies

  5. Signs and Symptoms • Usually, symptoms include severe itching, burning, and soreness, regardless of the infection’s location. • Oral: • Oral thrush typically causes creamy white lesions inside your mouth, particularly on your tongue and inner cheeks, gums and tonsils, and sometimes even the roof of your mouth. • Appears as whitish, velvety sores in the mouth and on the tongue • Underneath the whitish material, there is red tissue that may bleed easily. • Your doctor or dentist can almost always diagnose thrush by looking at your mouth and tongue. • The sores have a distinct appearance. Oral Thrush

  6. Signs and Symptoms • Vaginal: • Some symptoms are: • irritation • swelling • white vaginal discharge • severe itching • burning sensations in and around surrounding areas • painful urination Vaginal Thrush

  7. Signs and Symptoms • Penile: • Red, patchy sores may develop near the head of the penis. • May feel severe itching and/or a burning sensation, particularly upon urination. • A white discharge may also occur, but this is uncommon. • Cottage cheese like material under the foreskin • Yeasty smell • Cracked flaky skin on the outside of the penis including the shaft Penile Thrush

  8. Signs and Symptoms • In Infants: • May have white patches on inside of his/her cheeks; patches that resemble cottage cheese or milk curds on sides or roof of baby’s mouth. • Usually in babies two months or older, but may happen in older babies. • May also affect breast-feeding mothers • Causes the mouth to be very sore • If the white stuff comes off easily, it will leave a raw, red patch underneath. • First thrush symptoms are if the baby cries during breastfeeding, sucking on a pacifier or a bottle. Thrush in Infants

  9. Signs and Symptoms • If the diagnosis is not clear, some tests may be preformed to check for Candida: • Mouth scraping • Tongue Swabs • Stool Sample • Blood test Blood Tests Tongue Swabs

  10. Treatments, Cures, Prevention • Treatment: • The body normally controls the yeast with good bacteria; therefore, treatment is usually not needed. Usually, it will get better on its own in a few weeks. • Eating yogurt or taking over the counter acidophilus (a bacteria that helps digestion) capsules can help with mild cases of thrush after taking antibiotics • If you have diabetes, controlling blood sugar levels may clear thrush infections. • Anti-fungal creams help kill the infection, but they do not help your body restore itself so it can deal with the problem. • Practice Good Hygiene!

  11. Treatments, Cures, Prevention • Prevention: • To avoid repeat infections in those who get thrush often, doctors may prescribe an antifungal medication to be taken on a regular basis. • If an infant with thrush is breastfeeding, doctors may recommend antifungal medication to prevent future infections. • For bottle-fed babies with thrush, buy new nipples as soon as the mouth begins to clear. • Use a soft toothbrush and rinse your mouth with a diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide solution several times a day. • Good control of blood sugar levels in persons with diabetes may clear a thrush infection. • Avoid alcohol. • Don't eat any processed or refined carbohydrates. • Avoid foods that contain white flour or sugar. • Skip dried fruit, milk, and any foods that contain molds or yeast. • Kill fungi on your toothbrush after each use by soaking it in alcohol (70 percent) or hydrogen peroxide for several minutes. • Once again, practice good hygiene!
