About College Admission Tests • ACT • Consists of five tests: English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing • Writing component is optional • Top composite score is 36 • SAT • Consists of three tests: Verbal, Math, Writing • Each test is scored on a scale of 200-800
SAT PREP COURSE • 8-week course beginning in late fall/early winter • Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to noon • Information will be posted on the morning announcements.

Tips on Making a School Visit • See your counselor for a College Visit Checklist. • Phone ahead to the admissions office and make an appointment. • Request an interview with an Admissions Officer and Financial Aid Officer. • Meet with instructors in the major field of interest. • Observe classes. • Take a campus tour. • Visit a freshman dorm and eat in the dining hall

Tips on Completing Applications • READ DIRECTIONS carefully. • Colleges prefer on-line applications. • If completing a paper application, print neatly in ink. • Complete all information and check over before submitting. • Check spelling. • Request a high school transcript from the Guidance Office. • Ask your counselor to include letters of recommendation. • Enclose the application fee. • Submit applications to the Guidance Office two weeks prior to the deadline.

10 Tips for Parents • Help your student understand the college search process. • Be realistic and non-judgmental. • Be in the "back seat" - and not the driver - of the college search process. • Be open to dialogue and responsive to questions. • Be aware of deadlines and fees due. • Know that things have changed since your college days. • Don’t overemphasize your own alma maters. • Don’t compare your student with others. • Don’t dwell on disappointments, like a rejection letter. • Celebrate successes!
