Scientific Computing Facilities for CMS Simulation Shams Shahid Ayub CTC-CERN Computer Lab.
Focus of this Presentation • CMS MC Data Production • Data Production Requirements • Data Storage / Data Transfer Requirements • A Solution: A Beowulf / Linux PC Cluster(H/W & S/W) • Our Current Status • The Team
CMS MC Data Production • Phase I: Simulation • GEANT3 (FORTRAN) / GEANT4 (C++) • CMSIM • Phase II: ORCA Framework • Data Digitization • Object Database (Objectivity) • Distributed Object Databases (Federation)
Data Production Requirements • On a P-III @ 650 MHz • 1 event ~1 Mbyte of raw data ~105 sec, and • ~800-1K events 0.8-1.0 Gbytes of raw data in ONE day, and • On 10-12 P-IIIs @ 650 MHz • 10K events 10 Gbytes of raw data in ONE day.
Data Storage / Data Transfer Requirements • A Data Server Having: • large disk storage • high capacity Tape Drive support • Bandwidth of: • 256 Kbps ~90 Mbytes / hour ~2 Gbytes / day • 2 Mbps ~720 Mbytes / hour ~17 Gbytes / day
A Solution: A Beowulf / Linux PC Cluster (H/W) • 12 P-IIIs @ 667 MHz having: • 15 GB of HDD & Onboard 3Com 3C59x NIC • A Network: • initially 24-port hub/switch • later Giga bit Switch ?? • A Data Server • ~200 GB HDD & 18 GB Tape Cartridges
A Solution: A Beowulf / Linux PC Cluster (S/W) • Linux Redhat 6.1 • CERN and CMS specific Software and Libraries • Beowulf related Linux Kernel patches • Load sharing / monitoring Software • Batch Job Submission / Management Software
Current Status • Started last Wednesday at CTC-CERN Computer Lab. • 5 P-IIIs are networked via 8-port hub • Linux Redhat 6.1 • CMSIM Environment setup • CMSIM compiled and running • Plans: All 12 PCs - Work on ORCA - Work on Beowulf
The Team • A Combination of youth and experience • The members are: • Mr. Gufam Khan (Physics & MC) • Mr. Kamran Ashraf (System Admin & Development) • Mr. Suhail Basit (Hardware & C/C++ programming) • Mr. Muhammad Munir Ahmed (Networking & Sys Admin) • Shams Shahid Ayub
