First Step • The node is the best place to hold the wind chime to make the best sound. • Figure out the equation for the node. Ex. Length=14.0(in.), Peak Frequency= 818 then Node= 3.15 • The equation is Length*.2242= node
The Process • Cut the aluminum pipes down to size. • Used the lathe to smooth the edges. • Took measurements to find the node. • Marked the node. • Used the CNC machine to cut out larger circle. • Drilled the holes in. • Made smaller circle using CNC….Then drilled holes • Cut “Wind Catcher.” • Painted. • Assembled it all together.
Tools We Used • Lathe • Band Saw • Drill Press • CNC Machine • Our Brains • Height Gage
The Physics Of It All • Gravity pulls the chimes down. • The Wind Catcher catches the wind. • In turn that moves the disk, banging into the chimes. • Another equation we used is… = * * ___________ __________ Node X Node
How We Painted Our Wind Catchers • We mixed water and soap. • Upon adding the paint the soap made it float to the top. • We then “cut” it and mixed the paint. • Then we dipped our pieces. • And after to clean up we used newspaper to attract all the paint from the water.
How It Pertains To Engineering • Engineers measure twice and cut once! • The process overall is considered engineering. • Engineers take materials and make things out of them. • They make everything from guitars to science equipment. “DON’T DROP THAT!”
