  2. De Stijl • Dutch term for “the style” • Founded in the Netherlands from 1917 to 1931 • De Stijl advocated pure abstractionism and a reduction of forms and color to the essentials. • Artists used only vertical and horizontal lines • Artists used only primary colors and primary values

  3. De Stijl • These Dutch artists experimented in Architecture, Painting and Furniture design. • Theo van Doesberg, GerritRietveld

  4. Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) • Most recognizable De Stijl Painter • Used asymmetric black lines to divide the space and create shapes to fill in with primary colors

  5. Geometric Lines • Vertical lines are straight up and down • Horizontal lines are straight across from one side to the other • Geometric shapes are formed when these lines cross

  6. Primary Colors • The Primary colors are Red, Blue, and Yellow • All other colors can be made by mixing these colors

  7. Project assignment • Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of using geometric lines, shapes and primary colors to create a De Stijl style painting.
