Unlike 3-D Sculpture which is viewed “in the round”, or from all sides, Relief Sculpture is any object that projects from a supporting background. Relief sculpture dates back almost 20,000 years. It can be found on the outside of buildings, in churches, and often in ornate woodwork of turn of the 20th century mansions in the United States and Europe.
Modern Day Relief Sculpture often includes an art form called ASSEMBLAGE. It is an art form in which natural and manufactured, traditionally non-artistic, materials and objects are assembled into relief structures. It is a modern take on the more formal relief structures found throughout history, often in architecture.
Louise Nevelson is a well known ASSEMBLAGE artist. She was born in 1899 in Kiev, Ukraine. Her objects were often devoid of color, and painted in either all white or black.
