MEASUREMENT MRS. BRANDON PHYSICAL SCIENCE
WHAT UNITS OF MEASURE DO YOU USE IN EVERYDAY LIFE? • POUNDS • MILES • YARDS • FEET • INCHES • GALLONS • OUNCES • DEGREES • FAHRENHEIT
WHAT UNITS HAVE YOU USED IN SCIENCE IN THE PAST? • GRAMS • METERS • LITERS • DEGREES • CELSIUS
MODERN SCIENTIST USE AN EXPANDED METRIC SYSTEM • INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF MEASURE • ABBREVIATED SI
SOME COMMON SI PREFIXES • PREFIX SYMBOL MEANING • KILO k 1,000 • HECTO- h 100 • DEKA- Da 10 • Decid 0.1 (one tenth) • CENTI c 0.01 (one hund) • MILLI m 0.001 (one thousandth)
Measuring weight • Weight is measured in units called NEWTON or POUNDS • The newton (N) is an SI unit • If you weigh 90 pounds then your weight in SI units is about 400 newtons
MASS AND WEIGHT • WHILE WEIGHT AND MASS ARE RELATED, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PROPERTIES. • MASS IS A MEASURE OF HOW MUCH MATTER AN OBJECT CONTAINS, NO MATTER WERE IT IS LOCATED • WEIGHT IS A FORCE OF GRAVITY ON AN OBJECT AND DEPENDS ON THE FORCE OF GRAVITY ACTING ON THAT OBJECT.
What is Density? If you take the same volume of different substances, then they will weigh different amounts. Density is the Mass per unit Volume Wood Water Iron 1 cm3 1 cm3 1 cm3 IRON 0.50 g 1.00 g 8.00 g Q) Which has the greatest mass and therefore the most dense?
Calculating density • DENSITY=MASS/ VOLUME • A plastic fork has a mass of 5 g and a volume of 5.2 cm3. • What is the density of the plastic fork? • What do you know? • mass = 5 g; volume = 5.2 cm3 • What do you want to find out? Density • Write the formula: D=m/V • Substitute into the formula: • D =5g/5.2cm3 • Calculate and simplify: D = 0.96 g/cm3 • Check that your units agree: Unit is g/cm3. • Unit of density is g/cm3. Units agree. • Answer: D = 0.96 g/cm3.
Measuring volume • Do you drink milk or juice for breakfast? • If you do you measure it out until by how much of it you want to fill your glass. • VOLUMEis the amount of space an object takes up • The SI unit for volume is the cubic meter
Measuring volume • Use the formula: • VOLUME=LENGTH X WIDTH X HEIGHT • EXAMPLE IS : SUPPOSE YOU HAVE A CEREAL BOX THAT IS 20 CENTIMETERS LONG, 6 CENTIMETERS WIDE, AND 25 CENTIMETERS HIGH THEN THE VOLUME OF THE BOX IS : • VOLUME=20 cm X 6 cm X 25 cm = 3,000 cm cubed
MEASURING VOLUME BY FORMULA OR BY DISPLACEMENT DEFINED SHAPES USE THE FORMULA V=lwh Irregular shapes are measured by displacement Meniscus=the curved upper surface of a liquid in a graduated cylinder
A few other SI measurement • length is meter • Time is seconds • Temperature is celsius, which is most often used by scientist instead of fahrenheit • Kelvin is another unit used for temperature. Units on the kelvin scale are the same as the celsius • ABSOLUTE ZERO IS O ON THE KELVIN SCALE
Compare and contrast • How do you think Virginia colonist measured things then in comparison to today? • Was measurement even important then, and why is it important today? • Do you think that the colonist had their own measurement systems and do you think they were the same or different? • What kinds of things did they build and how did they measure them? What kinds of things do we build and how do we measure them?
VIRGINIA INFORMATION • VIRGINIA WAS THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL ENGLISH SETTLEMENT. • THEY WERE WEALTHY PLANTATIONERS • THEIR ECONOMY WAS BASED ON TOBACCO A CASH CROP • THEY NEEDED LARGE AREAS OF LAND TO BE SUCCESSFUL • THEY NEEDED A LARGE NUMBER OF WORKERS TO TO GROW THE CROPS
ACTIVITY FOR TODAYYOU WILL WORK IN GROUPS OF 5TODAYS PLANTATION • YOU ARE A VIRGINIA COLONIST AND YOU ARE A WEALTHY LAND OWNER. • YOU ARE TO CREATE A DIAGRAM OF WHAT YOUR DREAM PLANTATION WOULD LOOK LIKE, • YOU MUST KEEP A JOURNAL OF ALL THAT YOU DO. THE JOURNAL MUST BE IN FIRST PERSON NARRATIVE. THIS JOURNAL WILL BE USED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROJECT AND SHOULD INCLUDE PICTURES • INCLUDE WHAT ( OTHER THAN TOBACCO )AND WHERE YOU WOULD PLANT YOUR CROPS, WHERE YOU WOULD LIVE AND PUT YOUR LIVESTOCK • TELL HOW YOU WOULD RUN THE PLANTATION: IRRIGATION,MATERIALS, COST, WHO WILL HARVEST THE CROPS, WHAT WILL BE YOUR MAIN EXPORT? • BE CREATIVE!!!!!! REMEMBER THIS IS YOUR PLANTATION
