Depicted on the following slides are water samples taken from scuba diving rinse tanks at a dive facility on Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles October, 2007, for 3 days. • Equipment rinse tank “A” was drained, cleaned with bleach and rinsed each morning, before filling with water and sampling (~8:00 AM) • Equipment rinse tank “B” was drained and rinsed each morning, before filling with water and sampling (~8:00 AM) • Water samples were taken from both equipment rinse tanks at ~1:00 PM and ~5:00 PM • Water samples were taken from a regulator rinse tank daily at ~8:00 AM, ~1:00 PM and ~5:00 PM, but we did not know when this tank was drained and refilled (by dive facility personnel and other divers) • Water samples were taken daily from the hose used to fill all rinse tanks • On two days water samples were taken from buckets on dive boats used to rinse/store masks • 0.25 ml of each water sample was spread on Terrific broth-agar plates; plates were incubated at 37oC overnight and photographed
On all days, water samples from the hose (throughout the day) and from equipment rinse tanks “A” and “B” at ~8:00 AM, after draining, cleaning with bleach (“A”) or not cleaning with bleach (“B”), rinsing and refilling did not produce any bacterial colonies. Representative plates are shown below. Hose: Day 1, ~1 PM Hose: Day 2, ~8 AM Hose: Day 3, ~8 AM Tank “B”: Day 1, ~8 AM Tank “A”: Day 3, ~8 AM
Day 1 Regulator tank: ~5 PM had no colonies (not shown) Regulator tank: ~8 AM Regulator tank: ~1 PM Tank “B”: ~5 PM Tank “B”: ~1 PM Tank “A”: ~1 PM Tank “A”: ~5 PM
Day 2 Regulator tank: ~8 AM Regulator tank: ~5 PM Regulator tank: ~1 PM Tank “B”: ~5 PM Tank “A”: ~5 PM Tank “A”: ~1 PM Tank “B”: ~1 PM
Day 3 Regulator tank: ~8 AM Regulator tank: ~1 PM Regulator tank: ~5 PM Tank “B”: ~5 PM was empty and samples were not taken Tank “A”: ~1 PM Tank “B”: ~1 PM Tank “A”: ~5 PM, while filling
