Production drawings VPI groove runout – do we have a plan? Twisted racetrack coil Schedule slippage and revised strategy Goals, documentation, and plans Near term plans Schedule objectives Cost considerations Timing Agenda
The schedule for delivery of the TRC winding form has slipped by 2-3 weeks The project is revising the schedule by breaking the link between dissection the TRC and holding the Design FDR for the Type C coil Allows FDR to be moved up from mid-November to early-mid October Link added between dissection of the TRC and the start of winding the first production, now scheduled for early January Increases schedule contingency and robustness Modest slippages in the TRC do not impact the critical path Early delivery of the first production casting can be accommodated TRC schedule slippage and revised strategy
First and foremost, the TRC is a demonstration coil. It is not a vehicle for developing designs and procedures, but rather as a vehicle for proving that the designs and procedures that we plan to use on the production coils will indeed work. The design should be prototypical in every way. One exception may be that the degree of instrumentation required for the TRC may be greater than for a production coil because it is a demonstration coil. Secondary goals are to prove out the operation of the winding facility, train the engineers and technicians, and finalize the MIT/QA Plan and supporting procedures. TRC goals
A complete set of documentation (the same as would be required for the production coils) should be prepared, thoroughly reviewed, with proposed changes resolved Design documentation TRC winding product spec Complete drawing package prepared, checked, and promoted to prototype release level Winding process documentation MIT/QA Plan and supporting procedures and travelers prepared, reviewed, and ready for use Coil testing Instrumentation needs to be identified in design documentation ORNL to provide detailed test procedures for PPPL to use PPPL to provide procedures for verifying the readiness of the facility (for performance, personnel safety, and protection of the test article), for operating the facility, and for shutting it down safely. These procedures are complementary to the ORNL-supplied procedures which define the test to be performed. TRC documentation
Lead block design (DW) Modifications to the TRC winding form (DW) Instrumentation (DW) Incorporate preferred shim design (DW) Metrology, control of the current center, monuments (JC) Readiness for characterization of the TRC WF, training with laser scanner, redundant measuring equipment (JC) Determination of current center after fabrciation (BEN) Review plan (WTR) TRC issues
Need to update plans to carry us through the start of production coil winding before the end of the month Plans developed and iterated with Reiersen by 23 July Plans incorporated into Primavera by 30 July so we can process an ECP before statusing Every effort should be made to find offsets to increased scope and live within remaining budget – we are going through our contingency too fast Near term plans
