  2. Annexation of Texas • 1845- Texas annexed by US • Much debate over whether Texas should be annexed or not b/w Northerners and Southerners b/c of slavery

  3. Beginning of War • 1 month after Texas annexed, Mexico broke off diplomatic relations w/ US • Controversy over southern border of Texas • Pres. Polk sent over 3,000 troops into this disputed area • Mexicans killed several Amers here, which was excuse Polk wanted to start war

  4. California and New Mexico • Amer settlers in CA + NM began attack on Mex. forces and drove them out, declaring independence

  5. End of the War • Amer. forces fought + defeated Santa Anna’s troops in Mex. • Marched to + took control of capital Mex. City

  6. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo • 1. Mex. gave up claim to TX + recognized Rio Grande as border • 2. Mex. gave NM + CA (more than 2/5 of Mex. terr.) to US • 3. US paid Mex. $15 million • 5 yrs later- Gadsden Purchase- US purchased land from Mex. for $10 million for future railroad use

  7. Mex. War caused lots of strained relations b/w US + Mex. for many years • Most importantly, led to huge debate over expansion of slavery into new western lands • Strained relations even further b/w N + S

  8. The Mormons • Joseph Smith founded Mormons • As westward expansion continued, Brigham Young led Mormons to Utah
