  1. Abnormally Normal PBC Sermon Series

  2. Praying Jesus’ Way (Part 1)

  3. Matthew 6:5-8 MISDIRECTRED PRAYER PRATTLING PRAYER Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-4 THE LORD’S PRAYER Luke 11:5-10 and Luke 18:1-8 THE BOLD FRIEND THE PERSEVERING WIDOW

  4. MISDIRECTED PRAYER Matthew 6:5-6“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

  5. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

  6. to be seen by men. • I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

  7. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

  8. GOD IS MORE CONCERNED WITH WHAT COMES OUT OF OUR HEARTS THAN WITH WHAT COMES OUT OF OUR MOUTHS

  9. PRATTLING PRAYER Matthew 6:7-8 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

  10. [ESV: “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.]

  11. for they think they will be heard because of their many words • your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

  12. A SUGGESTION FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE GOT INTO A GROOVE OF PRAYING: • WHAT AM I WANTING TO SAY TO FATHER? • WHAT AM I WANTING TO ASK HIM? • AND THEN DO IT

  13. Matthew 6:9 This then is how you should pray: Luke 11:1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

  14. Luke 11:1-4 and Matthew 6:9-13 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘[Our] Father [in heaven], hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, [your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.]

  15. Give us each day [today]our daily bread. Forgive us our sins [debts], for we also forgive everyone who sins against us [as we also have forgiven our debtors]. And lead us not into temptation [but deliver us from the evil one].’”

  16. That God is our Father who needs to be acknowledged • “‘[Our] Father [in heaven], hallowed be your name, • (CEV: help us to honour your name.)

  17. 2. That we ask for his kingly rule to be established • your kingdom come, [your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.]

  18. 3. That we ask for the practical needs of the day • Give us each day [today] our daily bread.

  19. 4. That we ask for forgiveness … and the ability to forgive • Forgive us our sins [debts], for we also forgive everyone who sins against us [as we also have forgiven our debtors].

  20. 5. Acknowledging that we need his help to live lives that please him • And lead us not into temptation [but deliver us from the evil one].’”
