Front page layout The dummying phase: - Take an inventory of your content: Story content and visuals - Prioritize materials based on newsworthiness and layout elements - Think about headlines: Do any stories need subheads, decks, etc.?
Front page design Content: At least four stories, at least two photos. Top of page should include the name, date, location of your publication. Font: Need variety in point sizes, font and strength of font. Different elements deserve different treatment. Too much variation is … too much. Use typefaces that are markedly different. Select fonts that easy to read and do not distract. (Exception: Feature story.) Text: Be consistent across types: Headlines, bylines/staff title, credits, captions and jumplines. Use guidelines to line up columns of text. Avoid adjusting leading if possible. Pay attention to justification.
Front page design Fonts used: - Two used in headlines - Labels/cues typeface and bylines - Body copy - Caption and photo credit Size: - Photo credit is smallest size used - Body copy, kicker/label headline, bylines and jumplines appear to be same size - Headlines are different point sizes - Headers adjusted to fill columns
Front page design Visuals: Consider: Visuals are where readers’ eyes go first. Balance. Dominant image should be at least twice the size of your second image or visual. Too much text? Use a pull quote. Make a headline bigger. Add mugshots. Or assemble a fact box or infographic. Make it easy for readers to connect the image and caption with content.
