Identified 207 children with schizophrenic mothers [‘high risk’] • Along with 104 children with non-schizophrenic mothers (matched control) [‘low risk’] • Aged between 10-18 at the start of the study • Matched on: age, gender, parent socio-economic class and urban/rural residence The Copenhagen High-Risk Study

  3. A follow up study was conducted in 1974 and 1989 • The results were published by Parnas et al in 1993 The Copenhagen High-Risk Study

  4. The results suggested there was a strong genetic link in schizophrenia • Schizophrenia diagnosed in 16.2% of high risk group compared to 1.9% in low risk group • Schizotypal personality disorder diagnosed in 18.8% of high risk group against 5% of low risk group The Copenhagen High-Risk Study

  5. Combining the figures for the 2 disorders = 35% in high-risk group and 6.9% in low-risk group • Similar findings found in the New York High Risk Project = 25 yr follow-up (Erlennmeyer-Kimling et al. 1997) The Copenhagen High-Risk Study
