  3. What’s Next? • We covered Cover Chapters 13 & 14 – Job’s reflections. • Move to chapter 31 where Job reflects on his life. • Study Chapter 32 - 37 -- Elihu – a different way of thinking about Job and his problems. • Study chapter 38 – 41 God comes on the scene and questions Job • Chapter 42 – Job responds to God

  4. Move to chapter 31 where Job reflects on his life. • Actually, this reflection begins at Chapter 26. It is different, but similar in that it reflects on sins of various kinds of which he was not guilty. That being the case, let’s “fast forward” to the end of the chapter. • (Job 31:40 NKJV) Then let thistles grow instead of wheat, And weeds instead of barley." The words of Job are ended.

  5. Elihu speaks with a different direction • (Job 32:1-2 NKJV) So these three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. {2} Then the wrath of Elihu, the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was aroused against Job; his wrath was aroused because he justified himself rather than God.

  6. Elihu speaks against Jobs “friends.” • (Job 32:3 NKJV) Also against his three friends his wrath was aroused, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

  7. Elihu had waited • (Job 32:4-5 NKJV) Now because they were years older than he, Elihu had waited to speak to Job. {5} When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, his wrath was aroused.

  8. "I am young in years” • (Job 32:6-7 NKJV) So Elihu, the son of Barachel the Buzite, answered and said: "I am young in years, and you are very old; Therefore I was afraid, And dared not declare my opinion to you. {7} I said, 'Age should speak, And multitude of years should teach wisdom.'

  9. Age doesn’t always know best! • (Job 32:8-10 NKJV) But there is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding. {9} Great men are not always wise, Nor do the aged always understand justice. {10} "Therefore I say, 'Listen to me, I also will declare my opinion.'

  10. I listened carefully • (Job 32:11-13 NKJV) Indeed I waited for your words, I listened to your reasonings, while you searched out what to say. {12} I paid close attention to you; And surely not one of you convinced Job, Or answered his words; {13} Lest you say, 'We have found wisdom'; God will vanquish him, not man.

  11. I waited • (Job 32:14-16 NKJV) Now he has not directed his words against me; So I will not answer him with your words. {15} "They are dismayed and answer no more; Words escape them (have failed them). {16} And I have waited, because they did not speak, Because they stood still and answered no more. • (I waited until they finished)

  12. I must speak • (Job 32:17-19 NKJV) I also will answer my part, I too will declare my opinion. {18} For I am full of words; The spirit within me compels me. {19} Indeed my belly is like wine that has no vent; It is ready to burst like new wineskins.

  13. I must answer. • (Job 32:20-22 NKJV) I will speak, that I may find relief; I must open my lips and answer. {21} Let me not, I pray, show partiality to anyone; Nor let me flatter any man. {22} For I do not know how to flatter, Else my Maker would soon take me away.

  14. Job 33 Let me speak first with Job

  15. But please, Job, hear my speech, • (Job 33:1-3 NKJV) "But please, Job, hear my speech, And listen to all my words. {2} Now, I open my mouth; My tongue speaks in my mouth. {3} My words come from my upright heart; My lips utter pure knowledge.

  16. He acknowledges God • (Job 33:4-6 NKJV) The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life. {5} If you can answer me, Set your words in order before me; Take your stand. {6} Truly I am as your spokesman before God; I also have been formed out of clay.

  17. He reminds Job of his speech. • (Job 33:7-9 NKJV) Surely no fear of me will terrify you, Nor will my hand be heavy on you. {8} "Surely you have spoken in my hearing, And I have heard the sound of your words, saying, {9} 'I am pure, without transgression; I am innocent, and there is no iniquity in me.

  18. You are accusing God of injustice! • (Job 33:10-11 NKJV) Yet He finds occasions against me,He counts me as His enemy; {11} He puts my feet in the stocks, He watches all my paths.'

  19. He Doesn’t Answer to You • (Job 33:12-13 NKJV) "Look, in this you are not righteous. I will answer you, For God is greater than man. {13} Why do you contend with Him? For He does not give an accounting of any of His words.

  20. God Speaks in different ways • (Job 33:14-15 NKJV) For God may speak in one way, or in another, Yet man does not perceive it. {15} In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, While slumbering on their beds,

  21. God Guides Us • (Job 33:16-17 NKJV) Then He opens the ears of men, And seals their instruction. {17} In order to turn man from his deed, And conceal pride from man,

  22. He preserves man’s life • (Job 33:18 NKJV) He keeps back his soul from the Pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.

  23. Man is chastened • (Job 33:19-21 NKJV) "Man is also chastened with pain on his bed, And with strong pain in many of his bones, {20} So that his life abhors bread, And his soul succulent food. {21} His flesh wastes away from sight, And his bones stick out which once were not seen.

  24. Body Changes • The parts of the human frame which in health are carefully hid from the view, as being unsightly, become now prominent, and can be hidden no longer. One design is to humble us; to take away the pride which delighted in the round and polished limb, the rose on the cheek, the ruby lip, and the smooth forehead; and to show us what we shall soon be in the grave. -- Albert Barnes

  25. May we respond to warnings! • (Job 33:22-23 NKJV) Yes, his soul draws near the Pit, And his life to the executioners. {23} "If there is a messenger for him, A mediator, one among a thousand, To show man His uprightness, • (Job 33:22-23 NASB) "Then his soul draws near to the pit, And his life to those who bring death. {23} "If there is an angel as mediator for him, One out of a thousand, To remind a man what is right for him,

  26. I have found a ransom • (Job 33:24 NKJV) Then He is gracious to him, and says, 'Deliver him from going down to the Pit;I have found a ransom';

  27. A Reason to live • A ransom - Margin, or, “an atonement.” The expression here means that there was something which could be regarded as a valuable consideration, or a reason why the sufferer should not be further afflicted, and why he should be preserved from going down to the grave.

  28. Man can be restored • (Job 33:25-26 NKJV) His flesh shall be young like a child's, He shall return to the days of his youth. {26} He shall pray to God, and He will delight in him, He shall see His face with joy, For He restores to man His righteousness.

  29. Man can be restored • The meaning is obvious. He would be restored again to health. The calamity which had been brought upon him for purposes of discipline, would be removed. This was the theory of Elihu in regard to afflictions, and he undoubtedly meant that it should be applied to Job. If he would now, understanding the nature and design of affliction, . . . -- Albert Barnes

  30. Man can be restored • . . . turn to God, he would be recovered again, and enjoy the health and rigor of his youth. We are not to suppose that this is universally true, though it is undoubtedly often a fact now, that if those who are afflicted become truly penitent, and call upon God, the affliction will be removed. -- Albert Barnes

  31. Repentance is the key • (Job 33:27-28 KJV) He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; {28} He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. • (Job 33:27 NIV) Then he comes to men and says, 'I sinned, and perverted what was right, but I did not get what I deserved.

  32. God trys to bring man back • (Job 33:29-30 NKJV) "Behold, God works all these things, Twice, in fact, three times with a man, {30} To bring back his soul from the Pit,That he may be enlightened with the light of life.

  33. Elihu will speak for Job • (Job 33:31-33 NKJV) "Give ear, Job, listen to me; Hold your peace, and I will speak. {32} If you have anything to say, answer me; Speak, for I desire to justify you. {33} If not, listen to me; Hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom."

  34. For I desire to justify you • - I would do you justice. I would not pervert what you have said, or attribute to you any wrong opinions or any improper motives Perhaps there may be included also a wish to vindicate him, if he possibly could. He did not desire to dispute for the sake of disputing, or to blame him if he could avoid it, but his aim was the truth; and if he could, he wished to vindicate the character of Job from the aspersions which had been cast upon it. -- Albert Barnes

  35. What can we say? • Elihu, the youngest one of all, makes the most sense, and is basically correct. • Even righteous Job had come to have some misunderstandings about God and what He was doing. • There is wisdom in much counsel, but sometimes there is much confussion. • We must walk by faith, and not by sight.

  36. What’s Next? • We covered Cover Chapters 32 & 33 as Elihu begins a different way of thinking about Job and his problems. • Study chapter 38 – 41 God comes on the scene and questions Job • Chapter 42 – Job responds to God
