The groundhog is a furry mammal that can be black, gray, or brown. It has short stubby legs and a small bushy tail. The head and body is 14-20 inches long. It weighs 4-9 pounds.
Groundhogs live in burrows found at the edge of forests and open fields.
It eats insects, plants such as clover, grasses and wild flowers. Bobcats and foxes will eat groundhogs.
The babies are called pups or kits. Two to nine pups are born in March. They are blind and have no fur.
Before winter it gets very fat and then hibernates in the burrow.
