  1. Government’s New Ideas The National Convention was created on June 17. -Was made to support the revolution. - Contained three different factions. -It governed France from September 20,1792, until October 26,1795.

  2. The Formation of the Three Factions • Was created to limit the monarchy. • Created an outbreak against Louis XVI.

  3. The Mountains • Supported by the middle class and the poor. • Argued for a republic. • Believed the king should be executed and his power should be limited. • Made up of radical Jacobin deputies. • Controlled the government during the revolution. • Were called deputies because they sat on higher branches of the assembly. • Dominated the convention as they had the majority of the Committee of Public Safety. (Ruled France from 1793-1794.)

  4. The Plain • Had support of the Bourgeoisie and the San Culottes. • Made up of swing voters. • Switched to the Mountain. • Supported the Girondins.

  5. The Girondins • Were moderates. • Supported a constitutional monarchy. • Came from provinces. • Believed king should be executed. • Got support from Jacques Pierre Brissot. • Resented the influence of paris mob on the revolution. • Got support from most merchants. • Supported foreign war. • The trial of Louis XVI (December 1792–January 1793) left the Girondins open to the charge of royalism.

  6. King’s Last Words • The Girondins tried to avoid King Louis XVI’s trial. • The Mountains wanted the king to be executed. • Louis XVI died on January 21, 1793. • Was executed by the guillotine.

  7. France’s New Government • The new government of France erased all the old ways of life. • The religion was changed and many churches closed down. • A new calendar was invented. • The changed government ended the ways of the past.
