How to Succeed in Studying Basic study skills to learn
Take Efficient Notes • All notes are guided to help you know what to write down • Create a shorthand that you understand and help you write faster • Pay close attention while the teacher reads the slide • What does the teacher say that is not on the slide • Did you write the explanation or example • Did you rewrite the notes in your own words • Connect with something
Review, Review, Review • Look at the notes after taking them that day. • 10 mins. Of review every day will eliminate 3 hours of studying • What does it look like? • Simply reading the notes over again will work! • Re-teach! • Teaching material is the best way to remember the information • Re-teach the material to a sibling, parent, pet, stuff animal • Looking over and understanding will help!
Does Cramming work? • NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!! • Studies show a 5% increase in GPA for each hour studied (Stinebrickner) • Cramming does not work because it overloads the brain • It cannot remember the new information; only old information • The brain only remembers in 5 mins. • it will not remember the information crammed into it afterwards. • If you review each day, new material will be stored and refreshed each day
How to study 101 • 1. Pay attention and take notes in class • 2. Write the notes in your own words • 3. Re-read the notes every day • 4. Re-teach the information • 5. Make a crazy connection that you will remember • EX: Giraffes like to lick Gardeners. • 6. Quiz yourself (make a test and see how you do)
How will We Study • Each day at the end of class we will have 15 mins. To study • The rules: • 1. THIS IS STUDY TIME. NOT TALKING TIME • 2. If you abuse this privilege you will be sent out!! • 3. Use the skills presented to you! Take a piece of paper and begin re-writing in your own words OR re-read the notes over • 4. Brainstorm connections • 5. ASK QUESTIONS!!!!!
