  2. Developmental Characteristics of 5-Year Olds Socio-Emotional • Enjoys pretending, often with imaginary playmates & playing house, enjoys dramatic plays and role playing • Enjoys playing with other children • Shares and take turns • Gives help to others when asked to do so

  3. Developmental Characteristics of 5-Year Olds Socio-Emotional • Shows interest in light household chores • Obeys simple rules • Can distinguish right from wrong, good from bad at his level (concrete) & practices appropriate behavior such as honesty (telling the truth as against telling a lie)

  4. Developmental Characteristics of 5-Year Olds Socio-Emotional • Can work for delayed rewards • Can work independently • Seeks out adult approval • Still needs reassurance & affection • Likes to display new knowledge & skills • Attention span increases noticeably

Developmental Characteristics of 5-Year Olds Numeracy • Can count from 1 to 20; recognizes name and reads figures 1 to 20 • Sorts objects by simple characteristics • May tell time accurately by the hour • Tells the use of calendar • Knows concepts of smallest, less than, one half • Describes/distinguishes tomorrow from yesterday
