What are Developmental Assets? • Concrete, common sense, positive experiences and qualities essential to raising successful young people. • These assets have the power during critical adolescent years to influence choices youth people make and help them become caring, responsible adults.
The Two Types of Assets • External • Relationships and opportunities that young people experience in their families, schools, and communities • Internal • Competencies and values that youth develop internally to guide behaviors and choices
External Assets • Support • Empowerment • Boundaries and Expectations • Constructive Use of Time
Internal Assets • Commitment to Learning • Positive Values • Social Competencies • Positive Identity
Activity: Please review the list of Assets and the % next to them. • What is most important to you? • What is most interesting to you? • What is most surprising to you?

Asset Category Groups • Introduce yourselves to one another. • Record all the ways in which this asset category was built for you when you were young or is being built in the lives of youth today.
Principles of Asset Building • All young people need assets. • Everyone can build assets. • Relationships are key. • Asset building is an ongoing process. • Consistent messages are crucial. • Repetition is important.
So How Are Assets Being Built? • Let’s review some of the categories both internal and external that you said were built in your own lives. • How are these Assets being built in your school and/or community?
Activity: • Break into groups of 4: • Review articles given to you. • Share among each other the key points and discuss what you can accomplish in your own community. • Appoint a spokesperson to report out.
