Solving for a variable • Eliminate terms (add or subtract to each side) • Eliminate coefficient (÷ or mult. by recip.) • If a letter is in a ( ), get the ( ) alone first, then remove ( ) and continue • If there is more than 1 of desired letter in 2 terms, get the 2 terms together on same side and eliminate the rest, then reverse distribute (factor) and ÷ to get rid of ( ).
Examples • 1. C= 2πr solve for r. What is r if C = 44 in.? • 2. P = 2l + 2w solve for w. What is w if l=12m and P= 41m.
