Sourcing and Source Driver Status Ianos Schmidt CMS Week Feb.08
Outline • Air Drivers HE • Air drivers HB • Air system • HF Source tube installation • Electric drivers • USC cabling • Control electronics • Software • Miscellaneous issues
HE drivers HE+: • Drivers setup, tested and loaded with dummy wires. • Drivers installed and tested for proper operation within the HE. HE+ specific “to do”: • Install Geiger counter in nearside driver. HE- Drivers at CERN and setup complete. Now under test. • Expect to be ready for installation in ~1 week. HE- specific “to do”: • Install drivers, and related air pipes. Expected time window w/I ~2 weeks. • Connect control cable from cable chain. To do (Both endcaps): • Improve blocking of unused indexes • Virgil provided parts for blocking tubes. To be installed when access available. • Reinforce tubes at indexer bars • Above items will take some time. Access to the endcaps needs to be scheduled. • Produce index maps of all tubes. • Needed b/f extensive tube testing can happen.
HB Air drivers • Drivers at CERN, Setup, tested and ready for installation. • Problem with uneven driver mounting brackets . Solution using spherical washers proposed. Increases height of drivers by ~6mm, OK by Sasha Sirkov. • Dummy driver base plate produced so that bracket installation can now be tested. • Driver installation delayed because of incompatibility of mounted drivers and the cabling infrastructure presently installed in the cryostat • The dummy driver base plate can also be used to investigate the possibility of eliminating this incompatibility.
Air system DONE Filter 20u Lock out valves • YE+1,YB0-near: Panels completed and installed • YB0-far,YE-1:Panels Prepared, waiting for delivery of valves. (expected Feb.20). “Completion imminent”. DONE • Need to understand USC Installation. Who does what? • Connection of hoses to USC needs to be completed.
HF source system. • HF+ nearside tubes installed in their final configuration, and attachment to the driver indexer nearly complete. • Remaining tubes installed in the shielding and connected to wedges. Require inspection, rework where necessary, and final tie down before connection to indexers. 288 tubes need to be Connected to each indexer HF- trial installation. –Needs some re-work
Electric Driver (Status from Iowa) • Four drivers for HF ready to ship except for larger lead garages. • Decide on Monday weather to ship with original pigs or wait for larger ones. • All parts (except lead) for electric drivers have been produced. Assembly of remaining temporary drivers will start after shipping of HF drivers. Note: Due to the use of stronger sources it had been established that the original lead garages were insufficient. As lead is not a popular material to work with ,particularly at CERN, and because technical resources are limited at CERN, I requested to have Iowa produce the designs and evaluate the production of the larger garages as part of the driver upgrade project.
USC cabling • Termination of electric driver cables nearly complete (just HF on detector left). • Connectors for Air driver cables were needed. Connectors provided this week. Again completion is imminent.
Control electronics • Power supply box delivered to CERN (S.Linn). • Board layout done. • Gerber files being checked. • Parts lists nearly final, • Front panel layout complete To Do: • Layout backplane boards • BU needs schematics from me. • Produce prototype boards. • Assemble Crates • Build interlock box. • Need to resolved interconnection of interlock to zone safety infrastructure (switches, locks, lights…). *Note: We have prototype boards at CERN which will us to commission drivers.
Software • Rewrite of server started. • Migrated to MS C++ • Allows ‘dynamic’ creation/destruction and configuration of controller instances. • More compatible with DAQ configuration paradigm and no longer requires local configuration files. -Configuration to be from DB via XDAQ. • Controller code revised when new boards available. • XDAQ Software started. Still lots of work for me to do here. Eliminate Windows based server! Control of drivers will now be directly from XDAQ.
Miscellaneous issues • Need to perform dummy scans of all the PSD tubes to establish a database of “as installed” tube lengths. –Will take some time/effot. • Need storage/transport boxes (2+3+4+3+2 =14 min.) • 3 provisional boxes made by me but currently contain sources. • Plan to use HO RBX boxes. Design provide for production of lead storage pigs. Production can start whenever possible. • Need to procure some hardware for final assembly. • Zone interlocks, access control, safety and procedures: • RP, CMS GLIMOS (Christoph) and Pawel have reviewed the risks specific to our installation, and have established the general access control strategy. • LHC people will specify the safety infrastructure needed (HCAL does not do safety infrastructure). • Need to establish the interface to the source driver interlock. Christoph referred us to the appropriate LHC contact person. • Procedures for the use of sources are under revision to fully address the requirements and specific implementation in the UXC environment (Pawel).
