LACROSSE “The Fastest Game On Two Feet”
History • Lacrosse was developed by the American Indians and was played to settle tribal disputes. It was often brutal and sometimes resulted in death.
The Modern Game • Today’s game is not quite as brutal as the game played by the Indians, but make NO mistake; it is a rough sport!! • Lacrosse involves all the hitting of football and hockey, all the running of soccer, and all the eye-hand coordination of baseball…. It is all the sports rolled up into one AWSOME GAME!!
THE FIELD • Lacrosse is played on a field similar to that of football and soccer. It is 110 yards long and 60 yards wide.
The Players • There are 10 players per team on a lacrosse field at one time. Each team consist of 3 “Attackmen”, 3 “Mid-fielders”, 3 “Defensemen”, and 1 “Goalie”
ATTACKMEN • Attackmen play in the opponents defensive area. • Attackmen’s primary role is to score and play a little defense when the opposing team tries to “clear” the ball out of there end. • The next slide will give you some insight as to the role of an attackmen.
Mid-Fielders • Midfielders or “middies” are the work horses of lacrosse. • Middies play at both ends of the field and play both offense and defense. • To be a middie, you must be in great shape, aggressive, and a true athlete!!
Defensemen • Defensive men play on the side of the field with their goalie. • The purpose of the defense is indicated by their title: Defend Your Goal!! • Defensemen must be agile, strong, aggressive, and must be able to place well time stick and body checks.
