  1. Chapter 1 Re-cap In groups of 3 or 4: Give each of the 3 characters names. Allocate parts and act out the 1st chapter using some minimal dialogue. Perform your final piece in front of the class! Time allowed: 15 minutes

  2. Chapter 2 Read and enjoy (But take your time!)

  3. Chapter 2: Context and Influences Do any of these look familiar?

  4. Is The Arrival purely fictitious? Ellis Island opened in 1892 as a federal immigration station, a purpose it served for more than 60 years (it closed in 1954). Millions of newly arrived immigrants passed through the station during that time; in fact, it has been estimated that close to 40% of all current U.S. citizens can trace at least one of their ancestors to Ellis Island.

  5. Some more context… • The Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40pm on the night of April 14, 1912 and sunk just over two and a half hours later.

  6. Clouds Why is this cloud so large? What do the clouds on the next two pages tell us?

  7. Shaun Tan writes in an alien language. If you look closely at Chapter 2 you might see his name, recognisable in books and on posters! What might your name look like in a different alphabet? Try writing it on the front of your book… Here’s my name in Guajarati, Yiddish and Russian… શ્રી קאָאַטעס Коутс
