What is a summary?A summary is a brief restatement – in your own words – of the contents of a passage.
The key features of a summary are:1) It is shorter than the source ( a passage, an article, etc)2) It repeats the ideas of the source in different phrases and sentences.
Steps in writing a summary1) Read the article to be summarized.2) Reread the article, identify the key points.3) Make notes: write down the key points in your own words.
4) Put points in order 5) Leave out unnecessary detail: eg. Lists, anecdotes6) Write and edit your first draft – approximately ¼the length of the original. 7) Ask questions8) Write final draft
Remember: • Do not rewrite the original piece • Keep your summary short keeping within the word limit specified • Use your own words
• Refer to the main ideas • Read with WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW questions in mind • Do not put in your opinion of the issue or topic discussed in the original piece. • Write a well – constructed continuous paragraph.
