15. ENERGY HUB – WHAT IS IT? A place where people’s eyes are opened to the energy systems that surround them Visitors see key stories about energy and orientate themselves, learning where they are going next and what they can do in the gallery. They discover that energy is all around them and that that it has an amazing past, a turbulent present and several possible futures. There are symbolic objects from each energy era and live energy monitoring.

DARK PAST TO INDUSTRIAL MIGHT • Visitors start their energy journey in near-darkness. • Flickering flames light the way. • They see the world of wood, charcoal, water wheels, windmills and muscle power. • Visitors then enter the age of coal, gas and steam. • Coal boilers, coal fires, dominate. • Homes and streets are lit by gas. • Steam is the great energy user.
