Washington’s Farewell Address • 1796 Washington decided not to run for a third presidential term • Set his final precedent: Two-term presidency • He felt by stepping down, he would remind Americans that he was only a president, and not a king • Ideas in his farewell address: • America Should: • avoid debt and not borrow money • remain neutral and not develop permanent ties • Spend time/money on education • Should work towards domestic political unity (differing political groups hurt the gov’t)

6. Election of 1796 • For the first time, more than one candidate was running for president • Political Parties developed- groups that help elect gov’t officials and shape government policies • Two parties developed: Federalist Party and Democratic-Republican Party

7. Two Parties • Federalist Party- wanted to make the federal gov’t stronger, and promote industry and trade • John Adams and Thomas Pinckney were the candidates • Democratic-Republican Party- Wanted to limit the power of the federal government • Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr were the candidates

8. Smear Campaign • Both sides attacked each other during the campaign • Both sides also personally attacked the candidates ability to lead

9. Results • Adams narrowly defeated Jefferson • At the time, the second place finisher in the presidential election became the vice president • After competing against each other, Adams and Jefferson took office together
