  1. Fossil Group # 1 • Question: • What is a Mold • Define and sketch this fossil as an example of a mold

  2. Mold • A mold is a cavity in the ground or in a rock where a dead plant or animal was buried. The organism decays leaving behind only an imprint of itself • Molds go in! • These are molds of a fish and a trilobite, an ancient ancestor to insects

  3. Fossil Group # 2 • Question: • What is a Cast? • Define and sketch this fossil as an example of a cast

  4. Cast • A Cast is an object created when sediment fills a mold of an organism and hardens into a rock • Casts come out- they pop out like 3D • These are 3 casts of a trilobite, an ancient ancestor to insects

  5. Fossil Group #3 • Question: • What is a Coprolite? • Define and sketch this fossil as an example

  6. Coprolite • Coprolites are a type of trace fossil. • Coprolites are preserved feces or dung from animals. They can provide information about a dead organism’s diet. • According to Mr. Lyman this is coprolite from a Dinosaur!!

  7. Fossil Group #4 • Question: • What is a Trace Fossil? • What are some example of trace fossils? • Define and Sketch this as an example

  8. Trace Fossils • Any naturally preserved evidence of an animal’s activity is called a trace fossil • These trace fossils include tracks, burrows, and coprolites • This fossil is a trace fossil because it is a worm track

  9. Fossil Group #5 Question: What is amber? Define and sketch this fossil as an example

  10. Fossils in Amber • When insects get stuck in tree sap and the sap completely engulfs the insect its entire body can be preserved • Tree Sap that is hardened is called amber

  11. Fossil Group #6 • Questions: • Which part of an organism is best preserved? • Why? What happed to the other parts? • Sketch this fossil as an example

  12. Fossils in Rock • When organisms die the soft fleshy parts of their bodies decompose. The hard bony parts take more time to decompose and they are more likely to be preserved in rock.

  13. Fossil Group #7 • Questions: • What are fossils? • What two types of fossils are there?

  14. Fossil • A fossil is any naturally preserved evidence of life. • Fossils can either be found as actual organisms that have been preserved or traces of living organisms like prints or tracks

  15. Fossil Group #8 • Questions • What is permineralization? • What is Petrification? • Define and sketch this fossil as an example of mineral replacement

  16. Mineral Replacement • Fossils preserved by permineralization are fossils where the spaces between the tissues in the organism have been filled with minerals • Fossils preserved by petrification are fossils where all of the organisms tissues are completely replaced by minerals not just the gaps between them.
