  1. Bible Wisdom A game for groups of four players with follow up learning activities

  2. Wise words? Here are six pieces of wisdom. Which one do you like best? Tell a partner

  3. Here is a card game for four pupils to play in a group. • Shuffle the deck, and deal each pupil a hand of 5 cards. Look at your cards, but don’t show them to anyone else • Play by picking up and discarding cards in turn until you have a hand of 5 cards you think are THE WISEST 5 • When it’s your turn, take a card from the deck, and either put it down again face up, saying why you don’t want to keep it, or put down one of your other cards, saying why you don’t want to keep that one. • All the cards are carefully chosen quotes from the Bible, so you will end up with a ‘hand’ of 5 wise sayings from the Bible.

  4. Activity 1: Why is it wise? • When your group has finished playing, move to a different group of four, taking your five piece of Bible wisdom with you. • Share one of your cards in turn with people in your new group, and say why you think it is wise. • Listen to others in the group as well. • You can use these prompts to say what you think: • I’ve chosen this wise saying because… • What I like about this one is… • This will make life better by… • My main reason for choosing this one is…

Activity 2: Application: what difference would this wisdom make? • Use one of your ‘wise sayings’ to create a cartoons in two parts. • The first part of the cartoon shows what happens when people follow this wisdom. • The second part shows what happens if people do the opposite of the wisdom on the card. • Make your ‘not following wisdom’ cartoons as wacky and wild as you can. They are meant to be funny.

Activity 3: Ranking 10 wise sayings with a partner. • Work with a partner for this activity • Take the two lots of 5 cards and discuss in pairs: can you rank the wise sayings from 1-10, wisest at the top. Why is this difficult? • Next, ‘snowball’ the pairs, getting into groups of four, to see what was the same and different about the ranked order.

  7. Activity 4: Creative expression: 3 examples of wisdom and images • Choose the top 3 wisdom cards, and choose or create an illustration for each one. • There will be a display in the classroom of all good work from this. • We may also make a class book, with a page from each child. • Collect images, symbols and illustrations from internet, magazines or drawing and painting to express your ‘images of wisdom’ as well as possible

  8. This pupil can describe the impact of values. The piece of work is based on his own view, and the task asks for the skill of application. Level 4 AT2 is shown because he can apply ideas about rules for himself, and explores the consequences of decisions about values.

  9. Here’s a simple example of the beginning of activity 3. Do you agree with any of this person’s ‘top six’ wise sayings?

  10. Assessing achievements in work on Biblical Wisdom If pupils can say ‘yes’ to some of these, they are working at the level shown.
